MALMÖ, Sweden — A Swedish man has been charged with war crimes and terrorism related to the horrific killing of a Jordanian pilot in 2015, an incident that shocked the world. Osama Krayem, 32, faces allegations connected to the death of Moaz al-Kasasbeh, who was brutally executed by members of the Islamic State in Syria.
Krayem, a Swedish citizen currently serving a lengthy prison sentence for his role in the Paris and Brussels terror attacks, is expected to stand trial beginning June 4. Authorities detailed that he is accused of being part of a group that captured and burned the pilot alive in a metal cage. This gruesome execution became one of the most notorious acts attributed to the extremist group.
The Swedish Prosecution Authority revealed last week that Krayem and others forced al-Kasasbeh into a cage before setting it ablaze, leading to his agonizing death. The charges cover actions that allegedly took place between late December 2014 and early February 2015. At that time, Jordan was actively involved in a U.S.-led coalition aiming to combat the Islamic State and had been negotiating for the pilot’s release.
Jawdat al-Kasasbeh, the victim’s brother, expressed mixed emotions about the renewed focus on the case, acknowledging the pain it brings to his family. He voiced gratitude toward the Swedish authorities for pursuing justice after so many years. “It is painful for my parents to be confronted with this event again, but we are thankful that the authorities want to give us justice,” he stated.
Krayem’s background reveals a troubling trajectory. Hailing from Malmö, he reportedly traveled to Syria in September 2014 to join IS. Prior to this latest accusation, he received a 30-year sentence in June 2022 for his involvement in the Paris attacks, which resulted in 130 fatalities, as well as for planning an attack in Amsterdam. In 2023, he was also convicted for his role in the Brussels attacks, which claimed 32 lives.
Recently, he was temporarily transferred to Sweden from France to face the new charges related to al-Kasasbeh’s death. The ongoing legal proceedings will shed light on Krayem’s alleged activities during a dark period in both Syrian and global history.
