Tampa Man Charged After Stealing Ambulance for Joyride

TAMPA, FL – A man accused of stealing an ambulance and leading law enforcement on a chase through Tampa made his first court appearance on Monday. The suspect, 43-year-old Michael Escalon, is facing multiple charges, including driving under the influence, resisting arrest, and grand theft of an emergency vehicle.

Escalon allegedly took the ambulance from HCA South Tampa Hospital on Saturday night. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, he told officers that he had been drinking for two days and took the vehicle because emergency personnel refused to give him a ride home. During the pursuit, Escalon reportedly ran several stop signs, drove on the wrong side of the road, and nearly collided with other vehicles.

The chase ended at South Hubert Avenue and West San Pedro Street, where officers apprehended Escalon. He was seen drinking a beer just before being pulled from the driver’s seat and placed in handcuffs. In court, prosecutors highlighted Escalon’s history of similar offenses, noting that he has four prior DUI convictions.

The judge expressed concern over Escalon’s disregard for authority and the potential danger he posed to the community. Escalon’s defense pointed out that he has family ties to the area but acknowledged his lack of stable income.

Tampa Fire Rescue issued a statement confirming that the ambulance was stolen while personnel were transferring a patient to the hospital. They expressed relief that no one was injured during the incident and announced an internal review to improve security measures and prevent future occurrences.

Escalon remains in custody at the Hillsborough County Jail with a bond set at $333,000. The case underscores the ongoing issue of impaired driving and the risks it poses to public safety. Authorities are committed to addressing these challenges and ensuring the safety of the community.
