Birmingham, Alabama — A chaotic scene unfolded in a bustling entertainment district late Saturday night when gunfire erupted among a crowd, resulting in four fatalities and nearly 20 injuries. Authorities report this tragic incident was concentrated on a single target, though numerous bystanders were caught in the violent outbreak.
The Birmingham Police Department responded just after 11 p.m. to reports of shots fired on the 2000 block of Magnolia Avenue South, near the Hush hookah lounge. Arriving officers discovered three individuals fatally wounded on the sidewalk and numerous others sustaining injuries throughout the vicinity.
Police Chief Scott Thurmond highlighted the ferocity of the attack, stating in a briefing that the assailants seemingly used machine gun conversion devices to unleash a barrage of bullets. Over 100 shell casings were found at the scene, underscoring the extensive nature of the gunfire.
By Sunday night, the total confirmed casualties included four dead—three dying at the scene and a fourth succumbing to injuries at a hospital. Seventeen other individuals were being treated for a range of injuries from non-life-threatening to critical.
The violence appeared to be a targeted hit, according to Thurmond. “This was not a random act of violence,” he said. “This was a calculated attack aimed at one individual, who we believe was among those killed.”
The deceased have been identified as Tahj Booker, Carlos McCain, both 27 and from Birmingham, and Anitra Holloman, 21, from neighboring Bessemer. The identity of the fourth victim, an adult male, remains unknown at this time.
Investigators are relentlessly pursuing leads, but no arrests had been made as of Sunday afternoon. The Birmingham Police Department urges anyone with information about the incident to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation.
“This tragic event has not only taken the lives of several individuals but also endangered many others,” Thurmond continued. “We are committed to bringing those responsible to justice and restoring peace within our community.”
Local residents and patrons of the Five Points South district are left shaken by the violence that has marred what is typically a lively hub for nightlife. The business community and civic leaders are calling for increased security measures to prevent future tragedies.
As the investigation continues, the Birmingham Police Department has also partnered with Crime Stoppers to facilitate anonymous tips, hoping that more witnesses will be encouraged to come forward.
This recent outbreak of violence underscores an ongoing challenge in urban centers across the country, where public areas can tragically turn into scenes of conflict. Public safety officials emphasize the importance of community cooperation and vigilance to combat these devastating incidents.
