Chattanooga, Tennessee — An inmate was killed during a violent altercation at the Hamilton County Jail on Friday, prompting an investigation by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI). The incident marks the third death in custody at the facility this year.
Authorities from the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) responded swiftly to the scene, where one inmate was severely injured in the confrontation involving a makeshift weapon. The injured inmate, identified as Leslie Walker, was given immediate medical assistance, but unfortunately, he died from his injuries before paramedics could transport him to a hospital.
Walker had been incarcerated since May 2020 on multiple charges, including attempted murder and aggravated assault. In contrast, the alleged attacker, Christopher Walton, barricaded himself in his cell following the incident. Special Response Team personnel from HCSO had to intervene to apprehend him. Walton was arrested in February 2023 on charges that included possession of a firearm with prior felony convictions and multiple counts of harassment and stalking.
Following the incident, Hamilton County District Attorney Coty Wamp requested a thorough investigation into Walker’s death, which will be conducted by the TBI. Once the inquiry is complete, all findings will be submitted to Wamp’s office for review.
Sheriff Tommy Jones of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office acknowledged that negligence may have played a role in the circumstances surrounding the assault but asserted that staff members should not be held criminally liable for homicide.
The sheriff’s office expressed condolences to Walker’s family, acknowledging the challenging circumstances they are facing. This tragedy follows another recent incident, where an inmate with a chronic illness also perished while in custody at the Hamilton County Jail, marking the fourth death this year.
The ongoing incidents within the facility have raised concerns about the overall conditions and safety protocols at the Hamilton County Jail. The community is looking for increased transparency and accountability regarding inmate safety and care in light of these alarming events.
