Teachers Under Siege: Assault at West Africa SHS Sparks Outrage and Calls for Justice

Madina, Ghana — The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has denounced a violent incident that occurred at West Africa Senior High School, calling it a serious threat to both the teaching profession and the safety of educational environments. The assault took place on February 13, 2026, when a group of male students, allegedly from Frafraha Community Senior High School, was found in a classroom with female students, violating school rules that restrict unauthorized visitors.

The confrontation began when teachers overseeing the students discovered the situation while many staff members were occupied with the school’s 80th anniversary launch. The educators challenged the intruders, demanding that they leave the premises. As tensions escalated, the situation intensified when the visitors became verbally abusive toward the teachers.

Despite efforts by the staff to remove the intruders, the students initially refused to depart. Eventually, with support, the teachers were able to drive the group away. However, in a troubling turn of events, the group returned later that day armed with clubs and sticks, launching a brutal attack targeting a specific teacher, Nicholas Teye, who sustained injuries.

The incident has been reported to the Adenta Police Department, which has issued medical forms for Teye’s treatment and is now conducting an investigation. GNAT is calling for the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the assault to act as a deterrent against future violence in schools.

In solidarity with the affected teachers, GNAT has urged its members in the Madina-Adenta-Abokobi area to wear red armbands as a symbol of protest against violence in the classroom. The association has also advocated for a thorough inquiry by the Ghana Education Service, emphasizing the necessity for appropriate disciplinary actions against any students found involved in the attack.

GNAT is further appealing to community leaders and local chiefs to help raise awareness about the implications of such violence, underscoring the crucial role teachers play in national development and the need to protect them. As tensions remain high, the association has expressed its commitment to continued vigilance and potential further action if justice is not served promptly.
