Teen dies, another hurt after Frisco sledding crash into tree

Police say the girls were being pulled on a sled by a Jeep when the sled hit a curb and struck a tree.

FRISCO, Texas — A 16-year-old girl died and another teen remains in critical condition after a sledding crash Sunday afternoon in a Frisco neighborhood, police said. The collision happened around 2:30 p.m. near Majestic Gardens Drive and Killian Court as a Jeep driven by a 16-year-old boy pulled the girls on a sled and the sled hit a curb and a tree.

Frisco police and fire crews found both teens with life-threatening injuries and began lifesaving measures before taking them to local hospitals. One girl later died; officials have not released her name because she is a minor. The other girl was listed in critical condition late Sunday. The Denton County District Attorney’s Office is assisting Frisco police with the investigation, which will determine whether any charges are warranted. The incident unfolded as North Texas dealt with snow, ice and dangerous wind chills from a weekend winter storm, adding pressure to first responders already handling an uptick in weather-related calls.

Investigators said a 16-year-old male was driving a Jeep Wrangler and towing the two girls on a sled when it struck a curb and careened into a tree. Officers did not detail the speed of the vehicle or the type of sled used. Witnesses told police the impact was violent, and a neighbor said they saw emergency vehicles arrive within minutes. “We saw several patrol cars and the area taped off and knew something terrible had happened,” the neighbor said. Authorities emphasized the accounts remain part of a preliminary timeline as detectives document the scene, examine the vehicle and sled, and interview those involved.

Officials said the teens’ identities would be withheld until proper notifications and because they are minors. Family members and community figures later identified the girl who died as Elizabeth Angle, a student at Wakeland High School, while the second teen’s name was not confirmed. Police did not release the names of the driver or additional witnesses. As of Monday morning, investigators had not announced any arrests or charges and called the crash an active case. The city’s emergency crews responded to multiple weather-related incidents over the weekend, including traffic collisions on residential streets coated with compacted snow and ice.

Sunday’s fatal crash occurred during one of the coldest stretches of the winter for North Texas, with an extreme cold warning in effect and neighborhood streets still slick. Frisco police said they were coordinating with the district attorney’s office on evidence collection and review, standard in cases that could involve criminal allegations. That process includes reconstructing the sequence of events, downloading any video evidence from nearby homes or doorbell cameras, and reviewing statements from the driver, passengers and bystanders. Police said they will share updates when significant findings are confirmed.

Authorities said next steps include a full crash reconstruction, interviews with all parties and potential forensic testing of the Jeep and sled. Investigators will also review whether roadway conditions or visibility contributed to the crash. If prosecutors determine charges are appropriate, filings could come after the reconstruction is complete. Police said they plan to provide a public update once the preliminary report is finalized and after the surviving teen’s condition is more stable. School officials are expected to coordinate with families on support services for classmates.

Neighbors left flowers near the corner where caution tape still fluttered Monday, and tire ruts remained visible in the slush. “It’s heartbreaking,” said resident Melissa Treviño, who lives a few houses away. “We saw the lights, and then we learned teenagers were involved.” Another resident described the street as “a family area where kids usually play when it snows.” Several said they planned quiet remembrances for the teen as they waited for word on the survivor.

The investigation remained open Monday afternoon. Police said they will release additional details once next-of-kin notifications are complete and after they determine whether charges will be filed. A further update is expected after the crash reconstruction and interviews are finished this week.
