Police say the 19-year-old had been missing since January.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Anchorage police have identified a person found dead outdoors Monday on Lois Drive as 19-year-old Kelly Hunt, who had been reported missing after leaving an Anchorage home in January.
Police said Hunt arrived in Anchorage on Jan. 6 and was staying at a home in the 3200 block of Oregon Drive. She left the residence the next morning, Jan. 7, and was reported missing to the Anchorage Police Department on Jan. 11. Detectives were assigned to the case after the missing person report was filed.
Officers responded at about 8:56 a.m. April 20 to a report of a deceased person outside in the 3500 block of Lois Drive. Police later identified the person as Hunt and said next-of-kin notification had been completed. No arrests have been announced, and police said the death remains under investigation.
Anchorage Police Chief Sean Case said Friday that investigators are still working to determine whether the case will remain a death investigation or be handled as a homicide investigation. “This case remains under investigation, and therefore, we are limited in what information we can share,” Case said in a statement.
The State Medical Examiner will determine Hunt’s cause of death. Case said police are not yet saying how long Hunt’s body had been at the location where she was found. He said investigators are waiting on the medical examiner’s work and continuing to review the case.
Hunt’s family thanked community members who helped search for her after she disappeared. In a statement, the family said volunteers, people who shared information and others who offered support had made a difference during the search.
As of Sunday, no arrests had been reported. Police said detectives are continuing the investigation, and the next major update is expected after the medical examiner determines Hunt’s cause of death.
