NAPERVILLE, Ill. — Two teenagers are facing charges in connection with a disturbing sexual assault that occurred Sunday afternoon in a Walgreens restroom. Authorities say the incident involved a 17-year-old and a 15-year-old, both residents of Lisle, who allegedly assaulted a female acquaintance at a store located at 713 East Ogden Avenue.
The assault took place around 3 p.m. when the victim was in the restroom. According to police reports, the older suspect, identified as James Patterson, allegedly confronted the victim and forced her against a stall wall while pulling down her pants. Despite her pleas for him to stop, Patterson reportedly repeated his actions, escalating the situation further.
Witnesses and police stated that during the incident, Patterson physically assaulted the victim multiple times, delivering punches as she attempted to defend herself. Meanwhile, the younger suspect allegedly recorded parts of the assault on his phone and also participated in the sexual assault.
After the victims managed to alert Walgreens employees about the attack, the two suspects fled the scene on foot. Naperville police responded quickly and apprehended both teens nearby. When officers took Patterson into custody, he was allegedly found in possession of the victim’s cellphone.
Patterson faces several serious charges including four counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault and one count of robbery. The younger boy, whose identity has not been revealed due to his age, is charged as a juvenile. He faces three counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault, four counts of child sexual abuse material, and one count of criminal sexual assault.
Patterson’s case has been moved to adult court, where he remains detained pending trial. He is scheduled to appear in court again on February 2. The 15-year-old is expected back in court on January 27.
The incident has raised alarm in the community, as local leaders and residents seek to confront issues of safety in public spaces. Advocacy groups are highlighting the importance of addressing violence against women and underscoring the need for effective prevention strategies.
As investigations continue, authorities are urging anyone with additional information regarding the incident to come forward. The police department is committed to ensuring justice for the victim and enhancing safety measures in public locations.
