Bonner, Australia — A 59-year-old woman was brutally attacked while jogging on a scenic trail Monday morning in the Australian Capital Territory. The incident occurred around 10:15 a.m. on the Centenary Trail, a well-known route for runners and cyclists that stretches 138 kilometers along the border of New South Wales and through urban and rural Canberra.
According to authorities, the woman was approached from behind by a teenage boy who allegedly choked her into unconsciousness. Upon regaining her senses, she attempted to flee but was struck in the head during her escape, causing her to fall to the ground. Reports indicate that the teenager continued his assault while she was down.
Following the attack, the assailant reportedly took the woman’s phone before fleeing the scene. The victim, in a desperate effort to find help, ran along the trail until she encountered another jogger who assisted her in contacting emergency services.
Emergency responders arrived shortly after and transported the woman to Canberra Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The incident prompted a swift response from law enforcement, leading to the apprehension of a 15-year-old boy a short time later. He faces a series of serious charges, including assault occasioning actual bodily harm, robbery, and choking to incapacitate another person.
Following his arrest, the teenager underwent a mental health evaluation and appeared in the ACT Children’s Court. He remains in custody and is scheduled to return to court on June 23. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident, emphasizing the need for enhanced safety measures on popular trails.
This violent occurrence serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by individuals in public spaces. Local residents have been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity in the area.
