Melbourne, Australia — A couple in southeastern Melbourne experienced a harrowing home invasion early on January 23, when two suspects allegedly held them at gunpoint inside their residence. Authorities stated that the incident occurred around 2:20 a.m. in Clyde North, where the suspects appeared to be surveilling the area before targeting the couple’s home.
According to reports, the assailants parked a maroon four-door sedan nearby and approached the home. Rod and Annie Maureen, who were inside their house, were caught off guard when the suspects entered through the garage, which had been left slightly ajar. Rod, 58, had gone outside for a cigarette and inadvertently made the garage accessible.
Annie Maureen, 59, recounted the terrifying moment when she was awakened by the presence of two men brandishing firearms. “I was startled to find two guns pointed at me,” she said, reflecting on the ordeal. The intruders demanded her car keys, specifically for their Lexus. They quickly found a spare key located near the front door and fled the scene.
While the thieves made off with Rod’s wallet and a garage fob, their attempt to steal the vehicle was thwarted by a club lock installed by Annie Maureen. “I knew the car looked appealing, so I wanted to ensure my safety,” she explained, adding that she hoped the club lock would deter potential thieves.
Following the incident, the suspects were last seen driving the maroon sedan toward Patterson Road. Rod suffered minor injuries during the attack and was treated at a local hospital. Annie Maureen emerged without physical harm.
Detective Senior Constable Candice Taylor described the assault as “completely opportunistic,” and linked it to a series of similar crimes reported in the area in recent weeks. “We have reason to believe that this vehicle is connected to other aggravated burglaries and motor vehicle thefts,” Taylor noted, emphasizing the impact such crimes can have on victims.
Investigators have released digital sketches of the suspects, who are both described as Caucasian. One is believed to be in his early 20s, approximately 180 cm tall, with a tanned complexion and blue eyes, while the other, in his late teens, shares a similar height and blue eyes, but was seen wearing a ski mask.
Taylor condemned the actions of the assailants, labeling the incident as cowardly and unacceptable within the community. “It’s disgraceful to target elderly individuals within their own home,” she remarked.
