Tewksbury Gas Explosion 52nd Anniversary: Remembering The Tragedy And Heroic Response

TEWKSBURY, Massachusetts – This year marks the 52nd anniversary of the Tewksbury Gas Explosion, a tragic event that claimed the lives of three men in 1972. The Tewksbury Fire Department commemorated the 50th anniversary in 2022 and will hold public remembrances every five years.

The explosion occurred when a gas delivery vehicle accidentally backed into a pipe at the Chapman Road liquified natural gas facility, which was owned by Lowell Gas at the time. The resulting blast was so powerful that it lit up the sky and was even seen by pilots landing at Logan Airport. The explosion took the lives of three men and caused injuries to several others, including a Tewksbury firefighter who later passed away from complications.

In the months following the tragedy, safety improvements were developed and implemented, including special shut-off valves, changes to firefighting gear, and new construction protocols. These changes were crucial in preventing similar accidents in the future.

The Town Crier would like to honor the heroic service of all those who responded to the tragedy and the community members who supported Tewksbury during such a difficult time. It’s important to remember the impact of this event and the lives that were lost, as well as the improvements that have been made to prevent such tragedies in the future.

As the 52nd anniversary approaches, the community will once again come together to remember the lives lost and the resilience shown in the face of tragedy. This annual remembrance serves as a reminder of the importance of safety measures and the bravery of those who respond to emergencies.
