McALLEN, Texas — A violent encounter unfolded Monday morning when a man armed with an assault rifle opened fire on federal agents and a U.S. Border Patrol facility. The confrontation resulted in the officer sustaining injuries before law enforcement fatally shot the assailant. Authorities have identified the shooter as 27-year-old Ryan Louis Mosqueda, who allegedly directed gunfire at agents as they exited the building located near the Mexico border.
Prior to the shooting, Mosqueda’s father was pulled over by Weslaco police for a traffic infraction early in the morning. During the stop, the father expressed concern for his son, reporting that Mosqueda had psychological issues and was in possession of weapons. This alarming exchange occurred around 2:30 a.m., not long before the shooting incident.
Witness statements and police reports indicate that Mosqueda drove a striking white two-door sedan, which bore letters painted on the driver’s side door that may have been in Latin. The meaning behind the graffiti remains unclear, and authorities are investigating whether it could relate to his actions at the border facility.
After the gunfire ceased and Mosqueda was neutralized, law enforcement officials discovered additional firearms, ammunition, and backpacks inside his vehicle. According to McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez, officers recovered a considerable amount of ammunition, raising further questions about the assailant’s intentions.
McAllen police received reports of the shooting at approximately 5:50 a.m. A responding officer, who has been with the force for a decade, sustained a knee injury during the incident. It remains uncertain whether this injury was caused by a bullet or shrapnel from the exchange of gunfire.
Authorities have established that Mosqueda had connections to a Michigan address but had been reported missing from a location in Weslaco just hours before the attack. This detail raises additional questions regarding the circumstances that led him to the border facility and whether he acted alone.
While the investigation continues, Police Chief Rodriguez assured the public that there is currently no ongoing threat. However, officials are still determining the motive behind the attack and whether other individuals were involved in the incident. The FBI is leading the investigation, and further inquiries are anticipated as more information becomes available.
This violent event raises concerns about the escalating tensions along the border, especially as federal policies regarding deportations and immigration enforcement intensify. As the situation develops, local residents and federal agents remain on high alert, reflecting broader anxieties over security in the region.
