Texas Capture: Suspect in December 2021 Assault of Elnaz Hajtamiri Extradited to Canada Amid Ongoing Investigation

Richmond Hill, Canada – A man wanted in a violent assault case dating back to December 2021 was arrested in Texas and has now been extradited to Canada, where he faces serious charges.

Authorities confirmed the apprehension of 25-year-old Sukhpreet Singh from Mississauga, Ontario, who was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service on August 19. The arrest was facilitated through collaboration with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and local law enforcement in Austin. Following his arrest, Singh was transported back to York Region on September 30, where he was officially charged with aggravated assault and conspiracy to commit an indictable offense. He remains in custody pending further legal proceedings.

York Regional Police previously issued a Canada-wide warrant for Singh in 2023 as part of their ongoing investigation into the brutal attack on Elnaz Hajtamiri, a case that has garnered significant public attention. On December 20, 2021, Hajtamiri was assaulted in an underground parking garage, where she was struck multiple times with a frying pan by several assailants before they fled in a vehicle. Although she suffered non-life-threatening injuries, the attack left the community shaken.

In a related development from the same case, four individuals had already been charged in 2022, including Hajtamiri’s ex-boyfriend, Mohamad Lilo, who was implicated in attempted murder and kidnapping. Recently, three additional suspects were arrested in 2023, bringing the total number of individuals charged in connection with the incident to eight.

Just weeks after the assault, on January 12, 2022, Hajtamiri was abducted from a family member’s home in Wasaga Beach. According to police, three armed suspects dressed in fake police uniforms forcibly removed her from the residence before escaping in a white Lexus SUV. Hajtamiri’s disappearance remains a high priority for investigators, with a $100,000 reward offered for any information regarding her whereabouts.

Law enforcement agencies in both Ontario and local jurisdictions continue to pursue leads in Hajtamiri’s case. The investigation has resulted in multiple arrests related to her abduction; in March 2023, Krystal Lawrence was arrested in Brampton and charged with kidnapping. This was followed by the arrest of Adams Suleman Ankamah in May 2023, who faces similar charges, along with firearms offenses.

Further complicating matters, a suspect named Deshawn Davis was captured by U.S. Marshals in California in August 2024 on unrelated charges. He had been listed on Canada’s “Bolo” most-wanted list in connection with the abduction case.

The anguish experienced by Hajtamiri’s family has been palpable, with her mother expressing deep frustration and despair in their search for answers. The ongoing efforts by York Regional Police and the Ontario Provincial Police highlight the seriousness of the situation. Authorities are encouraging anyone with information related to Hajtamiri’s case to step forward, trying to bring some resolution to a case that continues to unfold.
