TYLER, Texas — A road rage incident turned fatal Friday afternoon when a confrontation escalated into gunfire, leaving one man dead and a community in shock. Authorities have charged 23-year-old Dayton Alexander Morgan with first-degree murder following the shooting that claimed the life of 29-year-old Trevor Julian.
The incident occurred around 5 p.m. at the intersection of Grande Boulevard and Paluxy Drive. According to police reports, the confrontation began as traffic came to a halt at a red light. Morgan told authorities that his vehicle came to a stop closer to Julian’s white Tesla than he intended after the latter abruptly halted.
Eyewitness accounts reveal that tensions flared when Julian exited the Tesla’s passenger side. Reportedly, he and Morgan began yelling at each other, with Julian demanding Morgan to reverse his truck. Morgan, seated inside his vehicle, responded by urging Julian to move along. As Julian advanced towards Morgan’s truck, the situation escalated further.
In a statement to police, Morgan claimed that Julian approached his driver’s side. At that moment, he retrieved a firearm from his center console and fired into the vehicle, hitting Julian in the throat. Julian stumbled but fell forward before Morgan discharged the weapon again, striking him in the chest. Emergency services arrived shortly after, but Julian was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Investigators noted that Morgan indicated Julian did not make any verbal threats nor appeared to be armed during the altercation. A detective’s report revealed that multiple witnesses corroborated Morgan’s account but found no grounds justifying his use of lethal force for self-defense.
Forensic evidence collected from the scene indicated that Julian was positioned outside Morgan’s truck when he was shot, raising questions about the justification for the shooting. Additionally, three children and a woman were present in Julian’s vehicle at the time of the incident, underscoring the tragic nature of the altercation.
Morgan is currently being held at the Smith County Jail with a bond set at $1 million. The case has left the Tyler community in disbelief as they grapple with the violent outcome of what began as a routine day on the road.
