Texas Mother Discovers Gruesome Scene, Confronts Son Accused of Murder Near Family Home

WACO, Texas — A Texas woman made a horrifying discovery last weekend when she spotted a body near an RV on her property, sparking an investigation that led to her son’s arrest on murder charges. The incident began unfolding when the woman, walking outside her home Sunday morning, approached her visibly distressed son, according to authorities.

Identified as 36-year-old Richard Tanner Ozment, the man was obstructing his mother’s path, which led her to physically push past him. This confrontation revealed a gruesome scene: the foot of a woman half-hidden behind the recreational vehicle parked on the premises.

Upon closer inspection, the mother found the woman severely injured and immediately confronted her son, who claimed the victim had tried to stab him. Panic ensued, and Ozment’s father promptly called 911.

Arriving deputies entered a cleared area but initially could not locate Ozment. Meanwhile, the injured woman, later identified as Michaela Brooker, received urgent medical attention but succumbed to her injuries after being airlifted to a hospital.

The search for Ozment intensified, culminating about 10 hours later. He was found concealing himself in a stock tank near the crime scene, aided by law enforcement on horseback alongside K9 units.

This violent act stunned the local community and authorities. Sheriff McNamara described it as “one of the most horrific, brutal, and senseless attacks” in recent memory. He criticized the justice system’s decision to release Ozment, who had previously served 10 years of a 40-year sentence for a separate offense before being paroled.

The investigation revealed that the killing stemmed from what authorities labeled a “domestic disturbance,” though specifics about the relationship between Ozment and Brooker were not detailed by the officials.

Currently, Ozment is detained at the McLennan County Jail. He faces a $1 million bond on the murder charge and is held without bond on a probation violation charge.

The community remains shaken by the violence that intruded upon what many see as a peaceful area, raising concerns about parole policies and the mechanisms that allow potentially dangerous individuals to return to society. This incident has sparked debates about the efficacy of the parole system and its implications for public safety.
