WEST PALM BEACH, FL – A chilling crime from three years ago has prompted a lawsuit from a therapist who endured a terrifying hostage situation. Jane Doe, whose identity remains protected, has filed a suit against the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, her employer, and the assailant’s father, accusing them of negligence that led to her suffering.
On what seemed like a routine visit on July 1, 2022, Jane Doe entered the home of Svi Alwang in Boca Raton. Assigned to assist him, she was instead subjected to a brutal 15-hour ordeal of torture and abuse.
The lawsuit describes an attack meticulously orchestrated by Alwang, with measures taken to avoid detection, such as blocking windows and disabling phone tracking. These preparations were overlooked by responding authorities, according to the suit.
Jane Doe’s partner raised alarms when she failed to return home, leading to a search that found her car outside the suspect’s residence. Deputies responded but hesitated, unsure if a scream they heard was a cry for help, resulting in a critical delay.
The lawsuit holds the sheriff’s office, Rejuvenate Counseling, and Alwang’s father accountable, arguing they could have prevented the nightmare. Jane Doe contends that the situation warranted immediate intervention.
When authorities finally intervened, Jane Doe was found in a closet, a knife to her neck. Alwang was shot by law enforcement but survived. He later admitted guilt and is now serving multiple life sentences.
The sheriff’s office has declined to comment, citing ongoing litigation, while Rejuvenate Counseling has not yet responded.
As Jane Doe seeks justice, her case highlights the urgent need for improved responses to prevent similar tragedies, underscoring the lasting impact of such traumatic events.
