Fire rescue said three people were taken to Broward Health Medical Center.
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A rollover crash on Interstate 95 in Fort Lauderdale blocked all southbound lanes near Broward Boulevard on Sunday and sent three people to the hospital, according to Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue. One person was taken with life-threatening injuries, the agency said.
The crash snarled traffic along one of Broward County’s busiest commuter routes and left investigators working to sort out what happened and whether a medical issue may have played a role. Fire rescue crews and law enforcement officers closed the southbound side of the highway as they treated the injured, secured the scene and worked to clear damaged vehicles from the roadway. By Monday morning, officials had not publicly released the conditions of the other two people involved.
Emergency crews were called to the scene on the southbound lanes of I-95 near Broward Boulevard, where at least three vehicles showed clear signs of heavy impact. A black vehicle was flipped upside down, resting on its roof across lanes, while a silver car and another black car were also damaged. Responders loaded three people into ambulances and took them to Broward Health Medical Center for treatment. Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue said one patient was transported with life-threatening injuries, but did not identify the victims.
With the highway shut down, traffic backed up for miles as drivers tried to move around the closure. Vehicles slowed to a crawl on approach routes, and the delay stretched through nearby interchanges as drivers merged into fewer available lanes and searched for exits. The blockage affected both regular lanes and areas near the express lanes, leaving little room for cars to pass while crews worked. Officials did not immediately say how long the lanes remained closed, or whether any of the injured were drivers or passengers in the vehicles involved.
A man who said he arrived after the crash described what he saw on the roadway and what he said he was told at the scene. “Heartbreaking. It was sad to see,” Darryl Darling said, describing mangled vehicles and a van that he said rolled onto its side. Darling said the driver of the black SUV that overturned was a disabled veteran and had earlier struck several plastic poles on the highway before the rollover and a collision near Atlantic Boulevard. Darling also said state troopers told him the SUV driver was having a medical emergency, though investigators had not confirmed that account.
The Florida Highway Patrol had not confirmed the witness’s description of events leading up to the rollover, and officials had not released a detailed timeline of the crash or said whether citations were issued. Investigators typically examine vehicle positions, skid marks, debris patterns and damage points to understand how a rollover began and whether speed, impairment, distraction, mechanical failure or a sudden health episode contributed. Authorities also may review dash camera video, traffic cameras and statements from drivers and witnesses to determine the sequence of impacts and whether the vehicles were traveling in the express lanes, the general-purpose lanes, or moving between them.
Officials did not announce any arrests or charges connected to the crash, and the investigation appeared to be in an early stage. In the coming days, investigators are expected to finalize a crash report that can include roadway measurements, a diagram of the collision and interviews with those involved. The report may also address whether a medical episode was suspected or documented and whether any vehicle defects were found. As of Monday morning, the conditions of two of the people taken to the hospital had not been released, and authorities had not provided an estimate for when a full account of the crash would be made public.
Drivers passing the area described a chaotic scene of crushed metal and debris scattered near the overturned vehicle, while emergency crews worked around stopped traffic. Darling said the damage appeared to span both the express lane area and the main roadway, leaving multiple vehicles disabled and pulled to the shoulder. The crash site, near a major east-west corridor in Broward County, is a stretch of interstate that often carries heavy weekend traffic, and even a short closure can cause long backups as cars stack up behind the scene.
By Monday morning, authorities still had not confirmed what triggered the rollover or released the names of those injured. Investigators are expected to continue reviewing evidence and witness statements as they complete the crash report.
