Detectives found no weapon at the scene and had announced no arrests as they worked to determine what led to the deaths.
LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles police are investigating the deaths of three adult men who were found with gunshot wounds during a welfare check at a Hollywood apartment late Tuesday night.
Officers went to the 1900 block of Wilcox Avenue at about 11:30 p.m. after a family member requested that police check on someone inside the unit, according to reports citing the Los Angeles Police Department. Officers entered the apartment and found all three men dead.
The department’s Robbery-Homicide Division took over the investigation. Detectives remained at the building for much of Wednesday as they examined the apartment and tried to establish when the men were killed and what happened before officers arrived.
A detective at the scene said all three men had been shot. Investigators had not located a weapon, and police had not reported an arrest or publicly identified a suspect by Wednesday night. Authorities also had not disclosed whether investigators believed the shooter was among the dead.
The victims’ names and ages were not immediately released. Police described all three as adult men but did not say whether they lived in the apartment or explain their relationships to one another. The Los Angeles County medical examiner was expected to formally identify them and determine their causes and manners of death.
Police initially provided differing descriptions of the response time and the victims’ injuries. A department captain said officers arrived around 11:30 p.m. and found three deceased men. Earlier information indicated officers may have entered the apartment about two hours before that and found victims with gunshot wounds. Authorities had not publicly resolved that difference.
The apartment is near Cahuenga Boulevard in a busy Hollywood area with homes, apartment buildings and businesses. Police activity closed or restricted part of Wilcox Avenue on Wednesday while investigators worked inside the building and medical examiner personnel responded.
Some residents told local television stations that they may have heard gunshots during the previous weekend. Those reports had not been confirmed by investigators, and police had not established publicly how long the men had been dead before the welfare check.
The circumstances leading to the shooting remained unknown. Police had not announced a possible motive, described any evidence recovered from the unit or said whether surveillance recordings from the building or surrounding area were being reviewed.
The case remained under investigation Thursday. Authorities had not released the victims’ identities, identified a suspect or announced any arrests.
