DUBLIN, Ireland — A female tourist was left injured and shaken after being attacked without warning in the city center Friday morning, prompting serious concerns about public safety. The incident, described as a targeted assault, unfolded around 11:30 a.m. on Dame Street, where the woman was punched in the face by a man who then walked away calmly.
Kevin Kletzander, 33, was later charged with assault causing harm. In a court hearing, it was revealed that he allegedly displayed a lack of remorse for the attack, which left the tourist with visible injuries that could lead to lasting scars. During the court proceedings, Garda Niamh Dunne expressed significant concerns for the safety of the public, emphasizing the nature of the assault as a “totally unprovoked” act.
Witnesses present at the scene reported the severity of the woman’s injuries, which included a deep cut to her temple and swelling around her left eye. Following the attack, the victim was left bleeding and in shock on the ground, unable to continue her planned activities in the city. Garda Dunne indicated that the psychological impact on the tourist could be profound, further complicating her travel experience.
Garda Dunne also highlighted that numerous bystanders witnessed the assault, yet Kletzander remained undeterred as he walked away toward George’s Street. While Kletzander later presented himself at the Pearse Street Garda station, he reportedly showed no signs of remorse during questioning, although he did express some regret when formally charged.
In court, Kletzander’s defense attorney, Noel Boylan, noted that his client has a history of mental health issues and attends medical appointments regularly. Boylan mentioned Kletzander’s attempts to maintain a structured life by engaging in fitness activities and keeping in touch with family members. However, the presiding Judge Catherine Ghent cited the nature and seriousness of the assault when refusing bail.
The judge reflected on the evidence presented, underscoring the gender-targeted aspect of the attack, which heightened the court’s concern for the safety of other women in public spaces. Kletzander has been granted legal aid and remains in custody, with a next court appearance scheduled.
