Hong Kong — A tragic incident at Hong Kong International Airport has resulted in the deaths of two security personnel after a cargo plane lost control and struck a patrol vehicle, leading both vehicles to plunge into nearby waters early Monday morning.
The Boeing 747, operated by Turkish ACT Airlines on behalf of Emirates, had just arrived from Dubai when it veered off the runway around 3:50 a.m. local time. The four crew members on board were unharmed, but the two individuals in the security vehicle tragically lost their lives.
According to officials, the aircraft was taxiing when it began to skid to the left, ultimately colliding with the parked patrol vehicle. Steven Yiu, the executive director of airport operations, noted that the aircraft did not receive any assistance prior to landing and that the patrol car was positioned properly, well outside of the runway’s path.
“The patrol vehicle did not enter the runway area at any time,” Yiu explained during a news conference. “It was the plane that veered off course and crashed into the vehicle beyond the safety fence.”
Rescue teams arrived on the scene to find the plane split in two and floating in the sea. The four crew members had managed to reach the open door of the aircraft, awaiting rescue. In a search lasting approximately 40 minutes, first responders uncovered the tragic fate of the two security workers, who were found trapped inside their vehicle.
Following the accident, airport operations were temporarily affected as authorities initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. No other injuries were reported among airport staff or passengers, but the incident has raised urgent questions regarding safety protocols and operational practices at one of the world’s busiest airports.
