WAYNE, Mich. — A church service at CrossPointe Community Church was abruptly interrupted on Sunday morning when a gunman opened fire from outside the building, prompting a chaotic scene and leading to the suspect’s death. The incident, which occurred around 11:06 a.m., resulted in one injury among the congregation and raised significant concerns about safety in places of worship.
Police Chief Ryan Strong reported that the alleged shooter, identified as 31-year-old Brian Anthony Browning of Romulus, arrived at the church in a reckless manner. Witnesses stated that Browning exited his vehicle, armed with both a long gun and a handgun, before unleashing gunfire towards the church. Two church staff members and a parishioner intervened, returning fire and fatally wounding him. Emergency responders pronounced Browning dead at the scene.
The church’s security guard, who was among those who fired at the assailant, shared his harrowing experience. Jay Trombley recounted the sound of gunfire and its aftermath, indicating that damage from the bullets was extensive throughout the church lobby. “I know I did something yesterday that is going to stick with me for the rest of my life,” Trombley lamented. During the service, approximately 150 attendees, including families with children, sought refuge at the rear of the church as shots rang out. Pastor Bobby Kelly Jr. noted that the swift response from church members, combined with their awareness of the potential for a far worse situation, helped mitigate the risks.

Parishioner Dustin Fuoco, who was heavily involved in church operations, recounted the frantic moments following the gunfire when he feared for the safety of his wife and newborn child. “I was terrified because that room was emptied out,” he said, reflecting on the frantic search for his family amidst the confusion and fear that enveloped the church.
