DELAND, Fla. — A man was fatally shot Friday morning at an apartment complex on Botts Landing Road, prompting a significant response from law enforcement. The Volusia Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies arrived shortly after 11:22 a.m. to discover the victim deceased at the scene.
Authorities indicated that the incident stemmed from a domestic dispute involving the current boyfriend of a resident, who also serves as the complex’s maintenance man. During the altercation with the woman’s ex-boyfriend, the maintenance worker allegedly fired multiple shots, striking the man in the head, chest, and hand. Initial indications suggest that the confrontation took place outdoors, although a firearm was later located inside an apartment.
Residents of the complex were left shaken by the sudden violence. One tenant, Ashley Griffis, recounted her aunt’s harrowing experience. After hearing multiple gunshots, her aunt reportedly witnessed a woman pleading for help and saw the maintenance man armed. Griffis said her aunt called her frantically, conveying the chaos: “There’s a dead guy, blood everywhere. They’re asking me to do CPR and I can’t.”
Sheriff Mike Chitwood addressed the tragic implications of firearms in domestic situations, stating that when a gun is present during a conflict, the likelihood of severe outcomes increases dramatically. “If a firearm is anywhere near a domestic situation, somebody ends up dead,” he said, emphasizing the danger inherent in such circumstances.
As a precaution, sections of the complex remained cordoned off with crime scene tape as investigators continued to process the area and gather evidence. A wave of concern spread among the residents, many of whom were not permitted to return to their homes during the ongoing investigation.
At this time, officials have not filed any charges against the shooter, who has been taken into custody for questioning. The Sheriff’s Office assured that all individuals involved are accounted for and that a comprehensive investigation is underway.
Authorities are expected to release more details as the situation develops. Community members are rallying support for each other amid the shock of the day’s events, reflecting the unsettling reality of violence that can erupt in familiar places.
