NORTH CODORUS, Pa. — A violent confrontation in southern Pennsylvania left three police officers dead after a suspected stalker ambushed them inside an ex-girlfriend’s home. The incident unfolded on Wednesday afternoon as law enforcement attempted to apprehend 24-year-old Matthew James Ruth, who had been hiding out in the residence while armed with an AR-style rifle.
Officers from the Northern York County Regional Police Department arrived at the home around 2:10 p.m. to serve arrest warrants but found the front door unexpectedly unlocked. As they entered the house, Ruth opened fire, striking the officers at the threshold. A subsequent exchange of gunfire ensued, resulting in the death of officers Detective Sgt. Cody Becker, Detective Mark Baker, and Detective Isaiah Emenheiser. A sheriff’s deputy was also injured during the shootout before Ruth was killed by returning fire from the police.
The shooting arose from a pattern of troubling behavior exhibited by Ruth, who had previously dated the woman living in the home. A report filed by her mother had prompted police intervention after she observed someone in camouflage looking into the house with binoculars. Additionally, the young woman provided evidence from a trail camera, showing Ruth carrying a rifle and targeting the residence.
Prior to the fatal encounter, police had attempted to locate Ruth at his home in Hanover, about 10 miles away, but he was not present. The officers returned to the ex-girlfriend’s home later that day, hoping to arrest him based on a history of domestic violence. In August, her vehicle had been set ablaze, further raising suspicions about Ruth’s involvement.
The aftermath of the shooting sent shockwaves through the community, prompting an outpouring of grief. Residents gathered to pay tribute to the fallen officers, forming processions and leaving flowers at the police station. The police chief praised the slain officers, stating, “They were leaders within our agency, committed to protecting this community and standing beside their fellow officers.”
Governor Josh Shapiro voiced his concerns regarding societal issues surrounding gun violence, emphasizing the need for better approaches to address disputes without resorting to weapons. The loss of the officers marks one of the deadliest days for law enforcement in Pennsylvania in recent history, echoing a similar tragedy from 2009 when three officers lost their lives.
In a community accustomed to quiet rural life, neighbors expressed their shock and sadness at the violence that unfolded. Local residents reported hearing multiple gunshots and witnessing an increased police presence, with approximately 30 law enforcement vehicles responding to the scene.
Investigators continued to gather evidence from Ruth’s home following the incident, searching for clues that might explain his motives. Officials noted the disturbing connection between the shooting and domestic violence, a recurring theme in many such tragedies.
As the investigation proceeds, the community remains united in mourning, underscoring the sacrifices made by those who serve to protect.
