Prairie Grove, Arkansas — A 28-year-old man has been charged with the murder of a couple who were found dead while hiking with their young children in a state park. The bodies of Clinton and Cristen Brink were discovered in Devil’s Den State Park on July 26, prompting an urgent investigation and a subsequent manhunt.
James Andrew McGann was arrested on July 30 at Lupita’s Beauty Salon and Barber Shop in Springdale, about 33 miles from where the Brinks were killed. He faces two counts of capital murder, as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the case. The motive for the killings has not yet been disclosed.
Just days before his arrest, police released a sketch of the suspected assailant, which led to McGann’s identification. If convicted, he could face a life sentence or even the death penalty, as capital murder charges carry severe penalties in Arkansas.
Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders voiced her support for law enforcement’s efforts and emphasized that violent crime is unacceptable in the state. McGann had recently relocated to the area from Oklahoma, where he took a job as a teacher.
The Brinks, aged 43 and 41, had moved to Prairie Grove from South Dakota and were newly settled in the community, having just turned on the water in their new home, according to local officials. The couple’s two young daughters, aged seven and nine, witnessed the tragedy but were unharmed and informed park staff about the incident.
Neighbors of the couple expressed devastation over the news. One local resident recounted a conversation she had with Clinton and Cristen just days prior, noting the profound impact of their loss on the entire community. “I can’t imagine what those little girls went through,” she said.
During the initial search for the couple, officers reported hearing cries for help in the area, leading them to discover the victims. Extensive police efforts included combing the rugged terrain of Devil’s Den Park, where cellphone reception is notoriously poor.
Witness accounts from other hikers described an unsettling encounter with McGann before the incident. Some noted his unusual attire and demeanor, suggesting he appeared out of place and seemed to be on a mission. Police had previously issued descriptions of a man wearing dark clothing and carrying a large backpack, which matched reports from those who encountered him on the trail.
Following the tragic event, all trails at Devil’s Den Park were closed, with authorities urging the public to refrain from sharing information that could compromise the ongoing investigation. The chilling events have left the community in shock, as efforts continue to provide support for the Brinks’ grieving children.
