PHOENIX, Ariz. — A family’s desperate plea for assistance turned tragic Monday night when police responding to a report of an armed confrontation fatally shot a man who was attempting to restrain the gunman. The incident led to the death of the victim’s father and left a young man injured in a series of chaotic events.
Daimen Rosas, 19, was inside his home with his siblings when an individual with a history of mental health struggles, identified as the son of their landlord, began firing shots at the residence. Initially mistaking the gunfire for fireworks, Daimen quickly realized the severity of the situation when he heard the man shouting and the noise grew louder. He suffered an ankle injury during the onset of the chaos.
According to Daimen, the gunman later accessed the home by shooting out a sliding glass door. In a bid to control the situation, his father and uncle successfully disarmed the man, holding him on the ground while loudly declaring that the threat had been neutralized. During this time, Daimen’s father called 911 for assistance.
Tragically, as officers arrived on the scene, they encountered the tumultuous scene and fired at Daimen’s father, striking him in the head. Despite efforts to save him, he died at the scene. Both the gunman and Daimen were taken to the hospital for treatment.
Jarvis Alejandro Rosas Gonzalez, a family member, expressed anger over the incident, insisting that police were misinformed about the status of the gunman. He stated that his younger brother and mother had emerged from the house with their hands raised, communicating that the threat was neutralized and urging officers to refrain from using force.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety has assumed control of the investigation, confirming that shots were fired from outside the residence. On Tuesday afternoon, crime scene tape was removed from the area as investigators continued their inquiries.
The family is now calling for accountability as they grapple with the aftermath of the event. Jarvis lamented the outcome of what began as a call for help, expressing frustration and regret over their decision to involve the police.
In light of the sudden tragedy, the family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to cover funeral and related expenses. The emotional toll of the incident has left them seeking justice and answers in a situation that escalated from a plea for assistance to a devastating loss.
