BENGALURU, India — A tragic crowd stampede claimed at least 11 lives and injured over 50 others outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium as fans gathered to celebrate the Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s recent Indian Premier League victory.
The chaos unfolded Wednesday when the celebration, announced on social media, attracted an overwhelming number of supporters. With the stadium’s capacity at 35,000, estimates revealed that between 200,000 and 300,000 people surrounded the venue, leading to severe overcrowding. Many fans, eager to join the festivities but without tickets, attempted to enter the stadium. A false rumor about free passes being distributed at one of the gates triggered a dangerous surge, resulting in the stampede.
Among the deceased were predominantly young fans, the youngest being only 13 years old. They had come to witness a momentous occasion, only to find themselves caught in a devastating scene of panic and confusion.
In response to the tragedy, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru announced they would provide financial assistance of ₹1 million (approximately $11,654) to the families of those who lost their lives. Authorities have moved quickly in the wake of the disaster, arresting four individuals, including RCB’s Head of Marketing and Revenue, Nikhil Sosale. They are facing charges related to failures in crowd management and safety protocols. The Karnataka High Court has ordered a comprehensive report on the incident, emphasizing the need to investigate the circumstances and oversights that contributed to the tragedy.
