Stockton, California – A father is grappling with unimaginable grief after his son was fatally wounded during a shooting at a birthday party in Stockton on Saturday night. The chaotic incident occurred at a local banquet hall, resulting in the deaths of four individuals, including three children, and leaving 11 more injured.
Patrick Peterson, who attended the celebration with his family, described the harrowing moments as gunfire erupted. “It felt like chaos as shots rang out. I turned to see a shooter actively firing,” he recounted.
In the midst of the chaos, Peterson saw his 14-year-old son, Amari, lying on the floor with a gunshot wound above his heart. Desperate to save him, Peterson jumped over a counter and began performing CPR as party attendees scrambled for safety. Tragically, Amari later succumbed to his injuries. Peterson’s young daughter was also struck by a bullet but survived with minor injuries.
“This is a nightmare that no parent should ever have to endure,” Peterson expressed, his voice filled with anguish.
San Joaquin County Sheriff Patrick Withrow reported that the attack appeared to be targeted, likely involving multiple assailants. As of now, no arrests have been made, prompting a continued investigation into the incident.
Along with Amari, the shooting claimed the lives of an 8-year-old, a 9-year-old, and a 21-year-old man. Authorities have indicated that one victim remains in critical condition as they assess the aftermath of this tragic event.
In the days following the shooting, Peterson has been overwhelmed by vivid memories of the night. “Every time I try to sleep, I can’t help but picture him there, struggling to breathe,” he lamented.
Amari was described by his father as a kind-hearted soul with a passion for football and basketball. Peterson fondly recalled how Amari would express his love and appreciation daily. “He would always tell me, ‘Dad, I love you. Dad, I appreciate you.’ Those words meant everything to me,” he said.
