Hong Kong — A tragic incident at Hong Kong International Airport on October 20 has left two people dead after a cargo plane veered off the runway and collided with a security patrol vehicle, which subsequently fell into the sea. The crash took place early in the morning as the aircraft, a Boeing 747 operated by Turkish ACT Airlines under the Emirates lease, was arriving from Dubai.
The two fatalities were the operators of the security vehicle, who were inside the car at the time of the collision. Fortunately, the four crew members aboard the cargo plane emerged without injuries. The plane was reported to have touched down at approximately 3:50 a.m. local time and had begun to skid off the runway before hitting the patrol vehicle.
Airport officials stated that the pilots did not issue any distress calls prior to the incident. Steven Yiu, executive director of airport operations, noted that the aircraft went off course about halfway down the runway, veering dramatically to the left.
During a news conference, Yiu emphasized that the patrol car was not at fault. “The patrol car absolutely did not rush onto the runway. It was the plane that went off the runway and crashed into the patrol car,” he explained.
Following the crash, the plane split into two sections and floated in the water as rescue teams reached the site. The crew members were found waiting at the open door of the aircraft. Yiu Men-Yeung, a fire service official, reported that rescuers worked for approximately 40 minutes to locate the two personnel, who were sadly found trapped in the submerged vehicle.
Investigations are underway to determine the factors that led to this devastating accident. Experts will likely analyze both the aircraft’s systems and the airport’s operational protocols to prevent future incidents.
Air traffic incidents at major airports pose grave risks, and this tragedy underscores the need for stringent safety measures and effective communication among flight crews and airport security. The local community is in mourning for the loss of the two individuals, highlighting the human impact of aviation accidents on families and friends alike.
As investigations progress, additional details are anticipated, which may shed light on how such a severe incident could occur at a leading international airport.
