Tragedy Strikes at Stockton Birthday Party: Gunfire Claims Lives of Three Children and an Adult

STOCKTON, Calif. — A joyful toddler’s birthday party descended into tragedy over the weekend when gunfire erupted, resulting in the deaths of three children and an adult. The shocking incident occurred Saturday at a banquet hall where approximately 100 guests had gathered to celebrate.

Among the victims were 8-year-old Maya Lupian and 14-year-old Amari Peterson, both of whom were beloved by their families and community. Maya, a third-grader at Aspire APEX Academy, was remembered by her family as an outgoing child whose passions included dancing, singing, and drawing. “She was the light in everyone’s life,” they expressed, sharing their heartbreak as they prepared for what would have been her 9th birthday in just two weeks. A GoFundMe page has been set up to support her grieving family.

Amari, who attended the party with his parents and siblings, was described as the “glue to our family” by his mother, Kimberly Peterson. During the shooting, his father, Patrick Peterson, witnessed the chaos unfold. He recounted the harrowing moment he realized Amari had been shot and frantically tried to provide aid until emergency responders arrived. Tragically, Amari was pronounced dead at the hospital. His family is also raising funds to cover funeral costs as they cope with this profound loss.

Patrice Williams, the party host, detailed the horrifying moments as the celebration turned chaotic. Initially mistaking the sound for popping balloons, she soon realized gunshots were ringing out. Guests scrambled for safety as the violence erupted in what was meant to be a joyful occasion. Williams expressed sorrow for the families impacted by the tragedy and commented on the inexplicability of violence at an event catering to children.

Emmanuel Lopez suffered a devastating loss as well. His brother, 21-year-old Susano Archuleta, was killed in the attack, while his 9-year-old daughter survived a gunshot wound to the head. Lopez refrained from discussing the events leading to the shooting but emphasized the profound impact on his family.

In all, 11 people sustained injuries during the shooting, with authorities confirming that local law enforcement has yet to make any arrests. Sheriff Patrick Withrow described the incident as potentially “targeted,” calling on community members to come forward with any relevant information. He emphasized the greater responsibility the community shares in rejecting this kind of violence.

Stockton, home to approximately 320,000 residents, grapples with high rates of violent crime. Recent data indicates that the city experiences violent crime at more than double the state average. The local sheriff’s office continues to investigate the incident amidst rising concerns over safety and gun violence.

Officials urge the community to unite in efforts to prevent future tragedies, reiterating that complacency is unacceptable in the face of such violence. As families mourn and the community seeks answers, the impact of this weekend’s devastating event will be felt for years to come.
