DAVISBORO, Ga. — A violent altercation at Washington State Prison resulted in the deaths of three inmates, prompting authorities to place the facility on lockdown. The incident unfolded Sunday afternoon, shortly after 1:25 p.m., when a confrontation among inmates escalated, leading to chaos within the prison.
According to the Georgia Department of Corrections, the incident required immediate staff intervention. Employees quickly cleared the visitation area to ensure the safety of visitors, escorting them out without injuries. Multiple inmates, however, sustained injuries during the altercation, and approximately a dozen were reported hurt along with a correctional officer.
Witnesses described the event as shocking and swift, noting that guards moved quickly to address the situation, leaving one officer behind to monitor the visitation area. An anonymous observer recounted the rising tension as guards communicated urgent commands over their radios, making it clear that something was amiss. “You could hear her say, ‘Don’t open that door. You can’t come in here,’” the witness recounted.
As the altercation escalated, a group of inmates managed to overpower a guard and gain access to the visitation room. “There’s blood and weapons,” the witness said, grappling with the fear that engulfed the room. “They were standing between us and our loved ones.”
The deceased inmates have been identified as Ahmod Hatcher, 23; Jimmy Trammell, 41; and Teddy Jackson, whose sentences vary from aggravated assault to burglary. Hatcher, serving a cumulative 20 years, had a scheduled release date in 2038, while Trammell’s release was imminent just days away. The families of the victims are demanding answers and accountability, with Hatcher’s mother expressing her grief and concern over alleged unsafe conditions within the prison. “He was scared for his life. They were the cause of my son getting killed because they weren’t doing their job,” she asserted.
Adding to the gravity of the situation, Sheriff Joel Cochran noted that while disturbances are not uncommon in correctional facilities, the intensity of this incident was unusual. The sheriff’s office is currently investigating the matter alongside local and state law enforcement agencies, ensuring perimeter security and managing the unfolding situation.
The Georgia Department of Corrections has placed the facility on lockdown as officials assess the events leading up to the disturbance. An autopsy and investigation are expected to provide more clarity on the causes and dynamics of the violent outbreak.
Washington State Prison, established in 1991, is a medium-security facility with a capacity for 1,548 inmates. It features a variety of programs aimed at rehabilitation, including educational and vocational training, counseling, and recreational activities. Despite these offerings, the recent incident underscores ongoing challenges within the correctional system regarding inmate safety and security.
As the investigations continue, both families and the public are seeking transparency and action to prevent a recurrence of such tragedies within Georgia’s correctional facilities.
