Tragedy Strikes Bronx as Teen Charged with Murder in Heartbreaking Shooting of Man Buying Mother’s Day Flowers

BRONX, N.Y. — A 15-year-old boy was arrested Monday and charged with second-degree murder for the shooting death of 30-year-old Darren Davis, who was fatally shot while on his way to buy flowers for his mother’s grave just before Mother’s Day.

The tragic incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. on May 10 in the Mott Haven neighborhood. Authorities report the suspect opened fire, hitting Davis and a 42-year-old woman near the corner of Willis Avenue and 138th Street. Davis suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and collapsed just steps away from the bodega where he had finished his work shift. Emergency services transported him to Lincoln Hospital, where he was declared deceased.

The woman was injured in the leg and has since been reported to be in stable condition. Investigators are still working to determine whether the victims were targeted or simply caught in a random act of violence, as neither knew the gunman.

Family members expressed their devastation over Davis’s death, describing it as a needless tragedy. “You destroyed our family with this,” said Lashaye Davis, a cousin of the victim. She portrayed Darren as a vibrant individual with a caring nature, soft-spoken about the undeniable impact his loss has caused.

Darren’s grandmother, Alfair Davis, 81, expressed relief that the suspect is in custody, stating, “I am glad he is apprehended.” She held onto cherished memories of her grandson, emphasizing his peaceful demeanor and lack of conflict with others.

Law enforcement officials have not indicated whether further charges will be filed against the suspect concerning the injured woman. This incident is part of a concerning trend of increased youth violence in the Bronx, raising alarms within the community.

The surge in violence escalated just days after Davis’s death. On May 12, 16-year-old Evette Jeffrey was killed by a stray bullet while innocently riding her scooter near a schoolyard. Reports indicate a 14-year-old fired the fatal shot, allegedly after being handed a gun by a 13-year-old.

Tragedy struck again shortly after when an 11-year-old boy sustained injuries from shattered glass due to gunfire aimed during a gang confrontation. This barrage of incidents within the community is intensifying calls for action to address rising youth violence.

As the investigation continues, local residents and community leaders are left grappling with the ripple effects of these violent acts, urging a renewed focus on meaningful solutions to keep youth safe.
