Dallas, Texas, is grappling with the aftermath of a shooting at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility that left one man dead and two others hospitalized early Wednesday. Norlan Guzman-Fuentes, 37, was identified as the deceased by the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office, which categorized his death as a homicide.
Guzman-Fuentes was among three individuals wounded in the incident at the North Stemmons Freeway location. While he succumbed to his injuries at the scene, two other victims were transported to a local hospital. Family members identified one of the hospitalized victims as Miguel Ángel García, who is facing critical health challenges. His sister-in-law launched an online fundraiser to assist the family, noting that García is the primary breadwinner for his pregnant wife, Stephany Gauffeny, who is due to give birth imminently.
The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that one of the injured individuals is a national from Mexico, although it did not release names. Reports from local media confirm that García, originally from Mexico, is among those affected. Authorities have not disclosed the identities of the victims, despite inquiries to the Department of Homeland Security and ICE.
The alleged shooter, identified as 29-year-old Joshua Jahn from Fairview, was discovered deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound atop a building housing an immigration law office across from the ICE facility. The medical examiner ruled Jahn’s death a suicide. During a press briefing, the U.S. Department of Justice revealed that Jahn acted alone and aimed to cause harm to ICE agents. Investigators found notes at his residence suggesting he did not intend to survive the encounter.
In the wake of the shooting, immigrant advocacy organizations held a vigil outside Parkland Hospital to honor the victims. Immigration attorneys reported that detainees being processed at the Dallas facility have since been relocated to the Prairieland Detention Center in Alvarado, a community located approximately 30 miles south of Fort Worth.
