Tragedy Strikes Delhi Coaching Center: Three IAS Hopefuls Perish as Floodwaters Engulf Basement

New Delhi, India – Over the weekend, a tragic incident unfolded at a coaching center in Old Rajinder Nagar, where heavy rains led to flooding and the deaths of three young IAS aspirants. The catastrophe has uncovered apparent oversights by both the coaching center’s management and municipal authorities.

On Sunday, authorities revealed that numerous discrepancies had been identified regarding the setup and operation of the coaching facility which illegally ran a library in its basement. The Delhi Police have since taken action by arresting the center’s owner and a coordinator on charges including culpable homicide.

The flooding occurred on Saturday evening during unusually heavy rain, trapping more than 35 people, including students and staff, inside the basement. The deluge reportedly overwhelmed the facility’s infrastructure, breaking through barriers and filling the basement quickly with water. The ill-fated library was not equipped with proper drainage facilities, exacerbating the severity of the flooding.

Investigators have discovered that the basement’s entrance was secured by a biometric system that failed during the crisis, which potentially delayed the escape of those inside. Responding to this disaster, police and emergency services were deployed, and a frantic rescue operation ensued. While several individuals were rescued, three young lives were tragically lost.

The local police have formed multiple investigation teams to thoroughly examine the circumstances leading up to this tragic event. They are currently reviewing CCTV footage to better understand the series of events and determine any further negligence by those involved.

Evidence suggests that a lack of maintenance on nearby drainage facilities by civic bodies contributed significantly to the tragedy. A senior police official noted that the area’s roadside drain had not been cleared before the monsoon season, a critical oversight by the municipal authorities.

Following the incident, Deputy Commissioner of Police M Harsha Vardhan confirmed that a comprehensive legal case had been initiated looking into various aspects of negligence and misconduct related to the building’s construction and maintenance. Both Abhishek Gupta, the owner of the coaching center, and Deshpal Singh, the coordinator, have been detained and are facing judicial proceedings.

The case has prompted authorities to scrutinize local building regulations and safety standards more closely, especially concerning the utilization of basement spaces in commercial buildings.

Amidst the uproar caused by the incident, the community and families of the victims are demanding transparency and accountability. They hope that this tragic event will lead to stricter enforcement of safety regulations to prevent future occurrences. The city is still reeling from the impact of the incident, with local residents and officials calling for actions to ensure such a disaster never happens again.

As the investigation continues, the Delhi police may also call upon civic officials to testify about the failure to maintain the area’s infrastructure, potentially leading to further legal implications for those found responsible.
