Chayansa, India — A tranquil village in Haryana is reeling from a series of unexplained deaths that have raised alarm among residents and health officials. Over the past two weeks, at least 12 people, including five children, have succumbed to mysterious illnesses, prompting concerns that contaminated drinking water may be the catalyst behind this alarming trend.
The initial three fatalities occurred about 15 days ago, following a sudden outbreak of illness that swiftly escalated into an unprecedented crisis. Families across the village report that nearly every household is dealing with symptoms such as fever, coughing, body aches, or vomiting. Many affected individuals remain in critical condition after multiple hospital visits, fueling fears of a rising health emergency.
Responding to the growing crisis, health department teams have mobilized to the village, where they are conducting screenings and collecting extensive blood samples from residents. Officials have yet to pinpoint an exact cause, though the majority of those infected exhibit similar symptoms. This uncertainty continues to heighten tensions among villagers who suspect contaminated drinking water may be to blame.
Chayansa, home to around 5,000 people, relies on diverse and often inconsistent water sources, including limited municipal supply, underground tanks, tanker deliveries, and RO-treated water transported from nearby Hithin town. Many residents store water in underground tanks that do not receive regular replenishment, further complicating the situation.
As investigations unfolded, discrepancies among the causes of death became apparent. Some victims have been diagnosed with Hepatitis B or C, while others suffered from multi-organ failure and liver infections, raising fears of a potential outbreak linked to broader waterborne diseases. Since the investigation’s launch, of approximately 300 blood samples, only two confirmed cases of Hepatitis B or C have been identified, yet screenings have reached over 400 individuals.
Testing of drinking water has reinforced suspicions within the community. Out of 107 samples collected from households, 23 failed quality tests, showing bacterial growth along with a lack of adequate chlorination. This poor water quality has rekindled memories of past contamination crises in the region and underscores a pressing public health issue.
Public health experts emphasize that Chayansa’s situation echoes past incidents involving water contamination. A major outbreak in Indore’s Bhagirathpura area in late 2025 saw sewage infiltrate drinking water pipelines, leading to significant health repercussions, including widespread vomiting and diarrhoea. Following public outcry, officials then confirmed the bacterial contamination was to blame, resulting in the suspension of several civic leaders.
Across the National Capital Region, similar concerns have taken root. Residents of Brahmaputra Apartments in Noida Sector 29 reported noticing insects and sediment in their water supply, coinciding with an uptick in diarrhoea cases. Additionally, parts of Delhi have flagged aging pipelines and the risk of sewage intermingling with drinking water as ongoing threats to public health.
Experts stress that these recurrent incidents highlight a critical need for stricter monitoring of water quality and storage systems, routine chlorination, and faster response measures to mitigate the risk of waterborne disease outbreaks. Without prompt and effective action, the profound safety concerns currently facing Chayansa and surrounding areas could lead to further tragedies.
