Bangkok, Thailand — Tragedy struck on Wednesday morning when a construction crane collapsed onto a passenger train in northeastern Thailand, resulting in at least 32 fatalities and dozens more injured. The incident occurred around 9:10 a.m. as the train was traversing a high-speed railway construction zone en route from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani province.
Around 200 passengers were aboard the three-carriage train when it was struck by the crane, which was involved in the construction of a new rail line. Eyewitness accounts describe the train as traveling at approximately 120 kilometers (75 miles) per hour when the crane collided with it, causing a catastrophic derailment. The impact caused the second and third carriages to flip over, with a fire erupting in the second carriage.
Rescue operations commenced swiftly as emergency responders sifted through twisted metal and debris. Photos and videos from the scene show the crane lying precariously on the tracks, alongside the damaged train cars. Initial reports from local health authorities indicate that at least 66 individuals were injured, with eight in critical condition.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul expressed his sorrow for the lives lost in this devastating accident and confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances leading to the crane’s collapse. “We must understand how this happened to prevent such tragedies in the future,” he remarked during a press conference.
Witnesses recounted harrowing scenes as chaos unfolded. Local resident Suphan Imjantuek arrived shortly after the incident, recalling the sight of smoke rising from the wreckage. “I heard a loud noise, and when I got to the train, I saw many people lying there,” he said. He, along with a group of volunteers, attempted to assist injured individuals trapped inside the severed carriage.
The crane involved was part of a construction project linking Bangkok to Nong Khai, a border province adjacent to Laos. This initiative is part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, which aims to enhance infrastructure connectivity across Southeast Asia. Italian-Thai Development PCL, the construction company overseeing the project, conveyed its condolences and pledged to cooperate with the ongoing investigation, stating that it will provide support and compensation to the victims’ families.
While Ubon Ratchathani is less frequented by tourists compared to other destinations in Thailand, it is an essential region with cultural and economic significance. The railway construction is seen as a strategic investment to boost connectivity and development in the area.
