Tragedy Strikes Lawrence: College Bar Shooting Claims Life of 18-Year-Old, Leaves Friend Critically Injured; Two Suspects Charged with Murder

LAWRENCE, Kan. — A shooting outside a well-known college bar has left one teenager dead and another critically injured, prompting serious charges against two suspects. The incident unfolded early Saturday morning outside the Jayhawk Cafe, also known as “The Hawk,” and occurred as patrons were wrapping up their night.

Victims have been identified as Aidan Knowles, 18, who died at the scene, and his best friend, Brady Clark, 16, who was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. The Lawrence Police Department reported that both young men had been inside the bar shortly before the violence erupted around 2 a.m.

Brady Clark’s family expressed their heartbreak over the loss of Knowles and praised medical personnel for their quick response. “Our son suffered critical injuries, and thanks to the tireless efforts of first responders and medical staff, he survived,” the family said in a statement. They described the two young men as “innocent bystanders caught in the middle of a senseless act of violence” and requested privacy as they focus on Clark’s recovery.

In a separate statement, Bobby Knowles, Aidan’s father, expressed his deep sorrow and thanked first responders for their professionalism during a tragic situation. He emphasized that his son and Clark were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Two 18-year-old suspects, Caiden Clem and Daitron Daniels, were arrested soon after the shooting and are currently being held at the Douglas County Jail. Clem is charged with first-degree murder and aggravated assault, while Daniels faces more serious allegations, including first-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, and aggravated assault.

The police have highlighted a notable history of incidents at The Hawk, noting they received at least 59 calls in the past year, covering a range of issues from fights to proactive checks aimed at enforcing liquor laws. In response to the shooting, the bar released a statement expressing deep sadness and committing to cooperate fully with law enforcement. They also emphasized their priority of safety for both patrons and staff.

The Lawrence community is now grappling with the aftermath of this incident, underscoring concerns about violence and safety in public spaces. As families mourn and seek answers, local authorities continue their investigation, aiming to bring clarity and justice in the wake of this tragedy.
