Milwaukee, WI — Tragedy struck at Washington Park Wednesday night as 17-year-old Sherrone D. Thornton Jr. was fatally shot during a post-Juneteenth celebration event, authorities confirmed. Another teenager, aged 15, was also injured in the incident that occurred amidst what was otherwise a day dedicated to peace and community unity.
The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office reported that Thornton was multiple times hit by gunfire and pronounced dead at the scene, ruling his death a homicide. The 15-year-old victim, whose name has not been released, is currently receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained during the shooting.
Local law enforcement officials disclosed that they responded to a distress call around 8:53 p.m., concerning a group of approximately 50 young individuals close to erupting into a fight. Upon arrival, officers encountered a chaotic scene with gunshots being fired towards a playground at the intersection of North 42nd Street and West Lloyd Street.
Chief Deputy Daniel Hughes, from the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office, revealed in a press briefing that the suspect, identified only as another 17-year-old male from Milwaukee, was apprehended at the scene. The suspect had been previously charged in May with felon possession of a firearm and was out on a $750 cash bail at the time of the shooting.
Hughes described the suspect’s actions as indiscriminate firing, which led to Thornton’s critical wounds and subsequent death. Authorities plan to refer charges against the teenage suspect to the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office in the coming days.
The community has reacted with shock and grief, as the violent event unfolded immediately following the Juneteenth Peace Day celebrations, a day typically marked by activities promoting unity and reconciliation amongst community members. This incident casts a shadow over what had been a peaceful gathering, underscoring ongoing concerns about youth violence in the area.
Leaders from community organizations and local governance have stepped forward to express their condolences and call for action to address the root causes of such violence, stressing the necessity for more proactive engagement and support for the city’s youth.
As Milwaukee grapples with the aftermath of this tragic event, many are renewing their commitment to fostering safer community spaces and preventing such incidents from overshadowing future celebrations and public gatherings. The community seeks to reclaim the spirit of Juneteenth, not only as a historical observance but as a symbol of hope and collective resilience against violence.
Further updates on the investigation and any subsequent legal actions will be closely monitored as the community seeks justice for the young lives altered by this devastating event.
