Leland, Mississippi, was rocked by a weekend of violence that left nine people dead and 20 others injured across five separate shootings. The most severe incident unfolded in downtown Leland during homecoming celebrations, which followed a high school football game.
The Leland shooting occurred just after midnight on Saturday along Main Street. Mayor John Lee confirmed that six individuals lost their lives in this tragic event, which involved a total of 16 victims. Some of those hurt remain hospitalized, with their conditions currently undisclosed.
Authorities have not yet made any arrests in connection with the Leland shooting. The FBI’s Jackson field office is actively investigating the incident and has released surveillance images of four individuals believed to be implicated in the attack. While three of the suspects are men, one is a woman, and their identities have not yet been confirmed. Investigators have yet to determine the motive behind the violence.
In addition to the Leland shooting, the weekend’s violence began with two separate incidents occurring on Friday at Mississippi high schools, both of which were celebrating homecoming. At South Delta High School, gunfire erupted shortly after a football game, injuring one person who was hospitalized but survived. Sharkey County Sheriff Herbert Ceaser Sr. reported that law enforcement arrested two suspects in connection with that shooting.
At Heidelberg High School, two individuals were fatally shot on the school grounds, with at least one other person sustaining injuries but surviving. One victim was discovered on the baseball field, while another was found in a tailgating area near the bleachers. The horrific nature of this incident was heightened by reports that one of the deceased was an expectant mother.
Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves expressed his condolences in a statement, saying, “Our state is praying for the victims and their families, as well as the entire Heidelberg and Leland communities. Those responsible will be brought to justice.” Meanwhile, 18-year-old Tylar Jarod Goodloe has been taken into custody as a person of interest in the Heidelberg shooting.
The wave of violence did not halt with the high school incidents. On Saturday, two additional shootings occurred at college events—one at Alcorn State University and another at Jackson State University—resulting in one death and three injuries.
As the investigation continues, the FBI encourages anyone with information regarding the Leland shooting to step forward.
