Muskegon, Michigan — A deadly shooting Saturday afternoon in a typically quiet neighborhood left two people dead and three others injured, including a child. The incident unfolded around 3:15 p.m. in the Jackson Hill area, drawing a significant response from law enforcement and shocking local residents.
According to police, a 25-year-old man died at the scene, while a 22-year-old woman succumbed to her injuries later at Trinity Health Muskegon Hospital. Two other men, also aged 25, were hospitalized and listed in critical condition. A four-year-old child was treated for minor injuries and is expected to recover.
The investigation is ongoing, and police have not yet disclosed any details regarding potential suspects. They noted that this incident does not appear to be random. As officers gathered evidence in the area near McLaren Street and Jackson Avenue, residents expressed their disbelief at the violence, stating that the neighborhood had been relatively peaceful for years.
Kayla Tucker, a local resident, reported seeing numerous vehicles in the area as neighbors tried to assess the situation. Many heard gunfire, but such occurrences are virtually unheard of in this tight-knit community. “For this to happen, it’s very tragic and sad,” said Latrice Williams, who grew up in the neighborhood and knew one of the victims.
As the day progressed, additional resources arrived on scene, including the Michigan State Police forensic unit. Officers searched the vicinity, using flashlights to comb through the yard and surrounding areas, indicating the seriousness of the investigation. Witnesses described a tense atmosphere as the scene unfolded, with emergency responders working to stabilize the injured.
Local residents like Brian Hoekstra remarked on the unusual nature of the incident. “Most of the people around here are pretty quiet,” he said. He added that the most noise typically comes from high school football games, emphasizing the anomaly of such violent events in their community.
