BLACK JACK, Mo. — A night of violence in north St. Louis County has resulted in the tragic death of a 5-year-old boy and left two women hospitalized, renewing discussions around gun safety and the impact of firearms within families. The incidents occurred late Friday evening, underscoring ongoing concerns about community safety.
Police responded shortly before 10 p.m. to a residence on Jerries Lane in Black Jack, where they discovered the young boy suffering from a gunshot wound. Authorities have termed the shooting an accident, and despite rushed medical assistance, the child succumbed to his injuries shortly afterward. Residents expressed their grief and concern, emphasizing the need for responsible gun ownership. “Some people need to rethink how they store or carry their firearms to prevent tragedies like this,” remarked local resident Tabitha Bridges.
As of now, no charges have been publicly announced in connection to the boy’s death. Historically, prosecutors in the region have pursued legal action against adults whose failure to secure firearms has led to preventable injuries or fatalities involving minors. Previous cases serve as a grim reminder of the repercussions of unsecured weapons in homes.
In a related incident the same night, authorities investigated a double shooting on Olney Drive in Dellwood, where two women were injured. One victim, a 61-year-old woman, and her 37-year-old pregnant daughter, who resides with her three children, were both transported to the hospital. The daughter remains in critical condition. The alleged shooter, Leonard Davies, 67, is related to the victims, being the brother of the older woman and the uncle of the younger.
Davies faces several serious charges, including first-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child, as well as being a felon in possession of a firearm. Neighbors expressed shock at the violence, describing Davies as a personable member of the community. “It’s very surprising; this is usually a quiet and nice neighborhood,” said Marlon Lawson, who lives nearby.
The incidents have ignited demands for stronger accountability around gun storage practices, emphasizing a community desire for safer environments.
