Thane, India — A tragic incident on Monday morning claimed the lives of at least four people and left six others injured when passengers fell from a crowded local train in Maharashtra’s Thane district. The accident occurred as the train was en route to Kasara, between Diva and Kopar railway stations, during peak travel hours.
According to police reports, the situation escalated when commuters, many of whom were clinging to the footboards of two overcrowded trains, collided as they passed each other. Eyewitnesses suggest that the sudden contact caused passengers to lose their balance, leading to the unfortunate falls.
Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde expressed his condolences and pledged that authorities would take comprehensive steps to assist the victims’ families. “This incident is deeply saddening, and I share the sorrow of those who lost loved ones. We are ensuring that all necessary support is provided,” he stated.
Following the incident, the Railways initiated an inquiry to determine the causes behind the accident. Reports indicate that the rush of commuters trying to board trains during peak hours often leads to hazardous conditions, especially at entrances and exits.
A police official noted that around ten people fell from the moving train, with four being declared dead upon arrival at a civic-run hospital in Kalwa. The victims, aged between 30 and 35, were reported to have been standing at the train’s doors, a common practice during the busy morning commute.
The Central Railway’s chief public relations officer, Swapnil Nila, confirmed that eight individuals had been located on the railway tracks. Notifications about the incident reached railway control rooms shortly after 9:30 a.m., and all injured passengers were swiftly transported to local hospitals within twenty minutes.
Nila reported that a passenger had claimed that the incident occurred due to a collision between commuters on two local trains heading in opposite directions. He dismissed earlier rumors suggesting that individuals had fallen from a separate express train that had departed from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus.
In light of the tragedy, local leaders, including Shiv Sena member Naresh Mhaske, have called for a thorough investigation. “The precise circumstances are critical to understand. We need to know whether overcrowding, pushing, or other factors contributed to this incident,” he emphasized.
Ambadas Danve, Leader of the Opposition in the state legislative council, echoed these sentiments. He noted the alarming nature of the incident, particularly given the high volume of daily commuters using Mumbai’s rail system. “This raises serious questions about railway safety and the measures in place to prevent such alarming occurrences,” he said.
Medical teams were mobilized quickly following the incident, with local hospitals instructed to provide urgent care to those injured. The administration’s response highlights ongoing concerns about safety procedures during peak travel times on India’s vast railway network, raising concerns about the adequacy of measures to protect commuters against similar incidents in the future.
