East Baton Rouge, La. — A shooting incident early Thursday left one person dead and four others injured, including a young child, at an apartment complex on Willow Villa Road. The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of multiple gunshot victims shortly after 11:30 a.m.
Sheriff Gerald Sticker described the scene as chaotic and noted that investigators are still piecing together the circumstances surrounding the incident. According to Sticker, there were at least two shooters involved, and authorities are considering the possibility of a third individual as well. One of the shooters, identified as a 26-year-old male, has died, while the surviving victims continue to receive treatment at a nearby hospital.
Authorities recovered two firearms from the scene, a long gun and a pistol, but the motive behind the shooting remains unclear. Sticker indicated that those involved in the altercation were acquaintances, and the conflict reportedly escalated from a verbal dispute to violence. “We still don’t know what initiated the argument,” he said. “Regardless, there’s never a justification for resorting to gunfire.”
Sticker expressed deep concern over the presence of a three-year-old among the injured, highlighting the troubling trend of violence impacting innocent lives. “It’s heartbreaking,” he stated. “This is a reflection of a disturbing disregard for human life that we’re witnessing in society today.”
Investigators suspect that drugs may have played a role in the altercation, and they are exploring potential gang connections to the incident. Local residents described the area as typically peaceful, with few violent events historically. One lifelong resident remarked that this might be the first shooting the neighborhood has seen in two decades, emphasizing the shocking nature of the violence.
Despite the unexpected escalation, community members have rallied to support the victims and their families. Counseling services were made available on-site to assist those affected, as the community grapples with the aftermath of the incident.
As the investigation continues, law enforcement officials urge anyone with information about the shooting to come forward, stressing the importance of public cooperation in addressing violence in the area.
