Tragedy Strikes Reptile Gardens: Fire Claims Lives of Tortoises and Alligators, Community Unites in Support

RAPID CITY, S.D. — An early morning fire at Reptile Gardens has resulted in the unfortunate loss of numerous animals, casting a shadow over the beloved community attraction. The Rockerville Fire Department responded to the emergency call around 12:40 a.m. Friday, arriving to find a detached agricultural shelter engulfed in heavy flames and smoke.

First responders were able to contain the fire, but not before it claimed the lives of several tortoises and alligators housed in the facility. The blaze occurred in a building used to hold animals off exhibit, specifically impacting African spurred giant tortoises and red-footed tortoises, along with American alligators.

Terry Phillip, the general curator at Reptile Gardens, expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing the facility as a home for the animals, where staff devoted considerable care and affection to their well-being. Phillip noted that all the animals housed in the affected structure perished, leaving a palpable sense of grief among staff and supporters alike.

Despite the tragedy, Phillip emphasized the outpouring of support from the local community and beyond. Messages of condolence and encouragement have flooded in from across the country and around the world. “The love and care our team puts into these animals is immeasurable,” he said. “It has been heartening to witness such kindness in light of this heartbreak.”

Fortunately, some of the Reptile Gardens’ more well-known residents, including Orville, Tank, and Sampson, were unharmed, as they were located in other areas of the facility during the fire. No injuries were reported among firefighters or local residents.

As Reptile Gardens begins to assess the damage, Phillip remains hopeful about the future and confident in the resilience of the facility. He expressed gratitude for the community’s support, highlighting that it will be crucial in the recovery process following this devastating event.
