Tragedy Strikes San Leandro: Woman Fatally Shot While Walking Dogs, Suspect in Custody

San Leandro, California—A woman was fatally shot while walking with her boyfriend and their dogs Thursday night, prompting a swift investigation by local authorities. The shooting occurred around 11:10 p.m. at the intersection of East 14th Street and Williams Street.

Security footage revealed the couple strolling hand-in-hand, just moments before the incident, roughly one block from where the shooting transpired. As they approached the intersection, a dark sedan stopped at a stop sign before entering the intersection. Within seconds, the footage shows a violent act, with a person collapsing to the ground as the vehicle sped away.

Emergency responders arrived to find the woman suffering from a gunshot wound to the torso. She was rushed to a nearby hospital but unfortunately succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival. Police later identified the victim as an adult female but have not yet released her identity or details about her residence. Her boyfriend and the couple’s dogs were unharmed in the shooting.

Within an hour of the shooting, Dublin Police apprehended Rohith Sunil, a 21-year-old from San Jose, while he was driving a black Mercedes. Authorities have charged him with murder, and a handgun was retrieved during the investigation, according to San Leandro Police Lieutenant Matthew Barajas. Investigators are still looking into the motive behind the attack, noting no known connection between Sunil and the victim prior to the incident.

Local residents expressed their shock and disbelief over the violence that unfolded in what many consider a safe neighborhood. Hildie Spritzer, a neighbor, noted the tragic irony of a seemingly mundane activity like walking a dog turning deadly. “It’s just so sad,” she said. “My prayers are with the family.”

Another resident, Adrian Scott, also shared his concerns about mental health issues potentially contributing to such tragedies, emphasizing that innocent people should not fall victim to random acts of violence. Joseph Sanchez, another neighbor, echoed these sentiments, lamenting the loss of life over a simple outing.

This incident mirrors a previous shooting on June 14, when another dog walker, Ryan M. Christie, was killed nearby. Authorities arrested Andre Thomas Williams in connection with that case; however, investigators assert that there are no links between the two incidents. Lieutenant Barajas has urged the community to remain vigilant, reassuring them that the current circumstances are being thoroughly investigated to uncover the truth behind this latest tragedy.

As residents grapple with the aftermath, community members are reflecting on the dangers that can lurk behind ordinary activities and calling for greater attention to mental health and gun violence.
