Southport, N.C. — Three people lost their lives and five others were injured in a shocking shooting incident at an open-air bar on Saturday night. Authorities say the attacker, Nigel Edge, opened fire from a boat, targeting patrons at the American Fish Company, a popular venue known for live music.
Edge, 41, was apprehended shortly after the incident, facing multiple charges, including first-degree murder. According to Southport Police Chief Todd Coring, the gunman made his escape, navigating away from the scene toward the nearby Intracoastal Waterway. Officers located a man matching the suspect’s description loading his boat at a public ramp about 30 minutes later.
The shooting occurred around 9:30 p.m., sending shockwaves through the community. District Attorney Jon David, who arrived at the scene shortly after the attack, described the aftermath as “horrifying.” He noted that many victims appeared to be tourists, highlighting the tragic nature of the event occurring during a time of leisure for families and vacationers.
As the investigation unfolds, authorities have confirmed that Edge acted alone and there is no continuing threat to public safety. However, David mentioned that the suspect had previous encounters with law enforcement, although nothing indicated he was capable of committing such violence. Edge had previously gone by the name Sean Debevoise, according to information released during the investigation.
So far this year, the United States has seen over 324 mass shootings, where four or more individuals were either killed or injured. Authorities revealed that Edge used an assault rifle during the attack, adding to the growing concerns over gun violence.
In a heartfelt statement, the American Fish Company expressed sorrow for the victims and their families, announcing it would be closing indefinitely. Police are urging witnesses to come forward with any information, emphasizing the need for community support in these difficult times.
The local community is in mourning as it grapples with the implications of this tragedy. As the investigation continues, Edge remains in custody without bond and is slated to make his initial court appearance on Monday.
