Yokota Air Base, Japan — The Air Force is grieving the loss of four Airmen who died in unrelated incidents over the past month, which coincides with the military’s heightened awareness of safety during the season known as the “101 Critical Days of Summer.” This period often sees an increase in accidents and off-duty mishaps across the military branches.
Among the deceased, Senior Airman John C. Fernandez-Buestan, 23, was found unresponsive on August 20 in Shimoda, a beach town located approximately 80 miles south of Yokota. A radio operations technician with the 374th Communications Squadron, Fernandez-Buestan had been stationed at the base since 2022. The circumstances surrounding his death are currently under investigation, according to base officials.
“In our squadron, John was cherished and held in high regard. His loss has profoundly impacted our team,” said Lt. Col. Jesse A. Nelson, the squadron’s commander.
Another tragic incident occurred on August 16, when Senior Airman Joshua Aragon, assigned to the 790th Missile Security Forces Squadron at F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Wyoming, was fatally shot while off duty in Cheyenne. The shooting occurred in an apartment complex, leading to the arrest of Airman 1st Class Jadan Orr, who was charged with involuntary manslaughter. According to local police, Orr had been drinking with friends when he mishandled a firearm, resulting in the fatal incident. First responders declared Aragon dead at the scene. He had joined the Air Force in 2022.
Col. Terry Holmes, commander of the 90th Missile Wing at F.E. Warren, expressed his condolences, stating, “We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Senior Airman Aragon. He was a valued member of our defender team, and his passing leaves a tremendous void.”
Aragon’s death followed another recent fatality at the same base. Airman Brayden Lovan, 21, died on July 20 when an M18 handgun accidentally discharged while he was on duty. This incident triggered a review of the weapon’s safety, leading to the arrest of another Airman on charges related to making false statements and involuntary manslaughter.
On August 13, Airman 1st Class Tatyana A. Salceda lost her life in a vehicle-related incident at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska. The 28-year-old logistics readiness technician, originally from St. Louis, Missouri, is remembered as a promising young Airman. Base officials released a statement expressing their sorrow over her untimely death, though further details were not disclosed.
In yet another incident, Airman 1st Class Syamukonka Moonga collapsed during a physical fitness test on August 4 at Port Hueneme, California. Assigned to the 346th Training Squadron, Moonga did not respond to resuscitation efforts. His squadron commander reflected on the loss, highlighting Moonga’s character and potential.
As of early August, the Air Force Safety Center reported 25 fatalities attributed to “occupational safety” mishaps in fiscal 2025, with the majority occurring off duty. This marks a significant decrease compared to previous years, reflecting ongoing efforts to enhance safety protocols, even as the military grapples with these recent tragedies.
