Flagstaff, Arizona — Two law enforcement officials lost their lives Wednesday evening when their helicopter crashed while assisting in an active shooter incident. The Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) deployed a Ranger helicopter to provide aerial support during a complex situation involving an officer-involved shooting.
The distress call came while police were responding to a domestic violence report in a residential area north of U.S. Route 66. As officers arrived on the scene shortly after 8:30 p.m., a male suspect reportedly opened fire. The scene prompted an emergency alert from the Flagstaff Police Department, advising residents to avoid the vicinity and seek shelter.
Community safety was a priority as authorities worked to contain the situation. Although police later assured that the threat was neutralized, residents were warned to find alternative routes due to ongoing police activity in the area. The situation escalated over the course of nearly two hours before the suspect was apprehended, sustaining non-fatal wounds in the process. Fortunately, no additional injuries were reported during the incident.
The tragic helicopter crash occurred amidst these events, resulting in the deaths of both the pilot and a trooper-paramedic who were aboard. Their names have not yet been disclosed, pending notification of their families. However, the Arizona Fraternal Order of Police confirmed that the pilot, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, joined the AZDPS in May 2021, while the paramedic started in June 2022.
“This is an incredibly somber time for the Department of Public Safety, the Fraternal Order of Police, and the entire law enforcement community in Arizona,” said Michael Hunt, president of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 32. He emphasized the bravery and dedication of the individuals who lost their lives, noting that they answered the call to protect others and ultimately made the ultimate sacrifice.
Investigations into both the officer-involved shooting and the helicopter crash are ongoing. The AZDPS Major Incident Division is leading the inquiry, with support from the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.
