JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A tragic incident unfolded on Easter Sunday in a home on Jacksonville’s Westside, where a young man took the lives of his father and 12-year-old brother before ultimately ending his own life, as reported by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
According to Undersheriff Shawn Coarsey, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office was alerted to the situation when the mother of the suspected shooter, who had been shot multiple times, was discovered by neighbors at the entrance of their residence in the Duclay neighborhood. Upon entering the home, officers were met with a devastating scene.
Coarsey described the events leading up to the tragedy, revealing that the 22-year-old shooter, a biracial man, engaged in a heated argument with his white father over his use of racial slurs. The altercation escalated as the young man retrieved a gun, equipped himself with protective gear, and proceeded to fatally shoot his father and brother before targeting his mother, who fortunately managed to escape.
Inside the residence at the time of the incident were two teenagers, relatives of the victims, who were able to conceal themselves until law enforcement intervened and rescued them from the harrowing ordeal. The suspected shooter ultimately took his own life.
Amidst the investigation, authorities recovered two firearms from the scene, a long gun and a handgun, although it remains unclear which weapon was used in the violent act. Coarsey mentioned that the family had expressed concerns about potential mental health issues affecting the shooter, although prior to the incident, law enforcement had not been involved in any mental health-related interactions.
At this time, the names of the shooter and victims have not been disclosed by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. The mother, who is Black, was rushed to a local hospital for urgent surgical treatment.
The community remains in shock and mourning as they grapple with the devastating loss experienced in this tragic event. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, aiming to piece together a clearer picture of what transpired on that fateful Easter Sunday.
