Tragic 48 Hours in Ahmedabad: Two Fatal Road Accidents Shake the City, Leaving Families Devastated

Ahmedabad, India – The city was shaken by two severe road accidents last week which collectively resulted in the deaths of a father and a young man and left several individuals seriously injured. These incidents have sparked renewed concerns about road safety in the region.

The first dreadful event occurred late in the evening on November 2, when 45-year-old Lagdhirbhai Babubhai Desai tragically lost his life. Desai was riding his motorcycle with his 12-year-old son, Aryan, in the Oganj area near Navkar Heights when they were struck by an Activa scooter. Witnesses reported that the scooter, carrying three passengers, was being driven recklessly, leading to the fatal collision.

Lagdhirbhai sustained critical head injuries and was declared dead at the scene. His son suffered multiple injuries and was promptly taken to Sola Civil Hospital, where he remains in critical condition. In the aftermath of the accident, Bharatbhai Desai, the victim’s brother, filed a police complaint alleging negligence on the part of the Activa scooter’s driver. This prompted local authorities to open an investigation into the circumstances leading up to the incident.

Remarkably, just a day later on November 3, another tragic accident occurred on SP Ring Road near Bhadaj Bridge. Harsh Nitinbhai Kothari, a 28-year-old man, died following a collision between a Bolero pickup truck and a WagonR car. The accident happened close to Seven Seas Party Plot as Harsh and his family were returning from a Diwali celebration, indicating the festive period may have contributed to increased road traffic.

The Shah family, in the WagonR, suffered severe injuries in the crash. Rashmikant Madhusudan Shah, who recounted the events, reported that his brother Hareshkumar Shah, sister-in-law Kavita, nephew Abhi, and niece Honey, along with Honey’s husband Harsh Kothari who died, were all returning from viewing Diwali lights in the city when their vehicle was struck.

The family members were rushed to Sola Civil Hospital. While Harsh succumbed to his injuries, Hareshkumar, Kavita, and Abhi were later moved to Zydus Hospital for advanced treatment. Honey received care for minor injuries.

Both accidents led to the registration of cases with the Ahmedabad Traffic Police “A” Division, and investigations are currently ongoing. These tragic events serve as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of traffic negligence and have sparked calls for stricter adherence to road safety measures, particularly during festive seasons when the roads are notably busier.

Local traffic safety advocates argue that enhanced enforcement of traffic laws, combined with public awareness campaigns about the dangers of overloading vehicles and reckless driving, are critical to preventing such incidents in the future. These measures are seen as essential steps in safeguarding the community and preventing further loss of life on the roads.

As the city reels from these events, the conversation around road safety escalates, emphasizing the community’s urgent need for actionable change to ensure the safety of all road users.
