Kamloops, Canada — A man critically injured in a brutal assault last month has died, leading authorities to file a murder charge against the suspect. Jason Pinette, 39, succumbed to his injuries following the incident on September 27.
The assault occurred in the early morning hours on Notre Dame Drive. At approximately 5:08 a.m., police responded to reports of an injured individual. Upon arrival, they found Pinette with serious injuries and quickly transported him to a nearby hospital, where he was treated in critical condition.
Following a comprehensive investigation that involved several units from the Kamloops RCMP, a suspect was identified and apprehended. On October 8, officers charged 33-year-old Justin Hopkin-Jones with second-degree murder. He remains in custody as legal proceedings unfold.
Superintendent Jeff Pelley, head of the Kamloops RCMP Detachment, praised the collaborative effort of the team involved in the investigation. “Our officers dedicated significant resources to gather evidence and ensure a thorough investigation,” he noted. While specifics of the case are not currently available due to its status in the judicial system, Pelley expressed his condolences to Pinette’s family and friends during this difficult time.
The Canadian Mental Health Association’s Kamloops Branch confirmed that Pinette was a client of Merit Place Shelter, which is situated near the location of the assault. In a statement, the organization emphasized its profound sadness over the incident and offered heartfelt condolences to those connected to Pinette. They also stated that the assault was an isolated event and asserted that the shelter continues to provide a safe environment for its residents.
In light of the tragedy, the shelter has enhanced support services for both its staff and residents. While the organization is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation, it is currently not granting interviews.
